Tomorrow is Earth Hour, a great initiative. Except that... not really. Turning lights and other electrical appliances off is supposed to show up on power consumption measurements. It will, but it will not show on power production measurements: As one of my acquaintances pointed out, power centrals do not turn power generators on and off immediately on consumption changes. They do it over longer periods according to predicted power consumption - mostly to compensate for seasonal changes, etc.
To be honest, I don't think carbon dioxide should be our biggest environmental concern. I'm much more worried about toxic waste that results from modern technologies. We should not abandon attempts at using less energy, but we should balance that with the total costs, some of which may not be possible to measure from monetary point of view at present.
